Sanitation was a neglected agenda until the World Toilet Organization (WTO) decoupled it from the water agenda and brought it to the global center stage.
To give it importance and make it relevant for the public to see its challenges, WTO, founded by Jack Sim, believe in blending humor and serious facts.
Even more so, they use a Leverage Model, presented here, to mobilize resources and design stakeholder incentives for collective action in improving sanitation and hygiene.
WTO's movement has influenced public policies in China, India, Brazil, Nigeria, and ASEAN countries, bringing proper sanitation to 2.5 billion people. It has raised USD 14 billion in investments into privatized Brazilian wastewater treatment plants and cleaned up all the public toilets in China.
