The Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women is seen as the International Bill of Women’s Rights with rights that extend to the public and private realm. UN Women is the main body within the United Nations to promote rights with the aim to promote the empowerment of women, especially around violence against women and girls, and also sexual and reproductive rights. Rights are important in legitimizing the claims of women’s movements. An example of this is the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). Women’s movements have made visible the invisible mechanisms of power.
