An Overview of Global Humanitarian Crisis and Needs

Today, millions of people need humanitarian assistance due to natural disasters, war and conflicts, climate change, environmental degradation, and poverty. Add to this the most recent COVID-19-related losses, and the world has seen increased demand for food, water, sanitation, education, healthcare, and jobs. Governments have long struggled to meet their populations’ needs, and international organizations such as the United Nations along with the private sector at the national and local levels fill in at least some of the gaps. One of the largest potential and untapped sources of aid lay in the religious-based options provided by Islamic social finance.
