This lecture explores how the Amazon’s rural and urban inhabitants engage with each other and the forest. Discover how families migrate regularly between rural and urban areas for healthcare, education, and other opportunities, and how many urban residents feel disconnected from nature and the forest which surrounds them. Despite these challenges, however, there are many opportunities for boosting relations between the Amazon forest and its cities. These include economic incentives to encourage healthcare professionals to serve rural areas, implementing peri-urban agricultural belts to improve urban food security, increasing access to urban green spaces, and investing in innovation around the “smart cities, smart forests” concept.
