This case study presents an example of a judicial dispute-settlement mechanism, in which Nicaragua and Costa Rica filed a lawsuit to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over a conflict over the San Juan River. The main contribution of the ICJ judgment was to establish the concept of determining compensation of environmental damage.
