From Ocean Science to Ocean Sustainable Development

This chapter presents some amazing facts about the ocean, including that seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean and that the oceans provide 95 percent of the space for living creatures on our planet. There has been a cycle of decline in the oceans, as humans exploit the ocean for resources and materials and climate change affects the ocean. Sustainable development, and especially SDG 14, relies on the five P’s: prosperity, partnership, peace, people, and planet. Ocean governance is not coherent and, ideally, twenty percent of the oceans would be protected. This could be achieved through means like ending over-fishing, shutting down fishing on the high seas improving ocean literacy, and establishing a global ocean accountability board.
