The human dimension of terrestrial ecosystems is often neglected or poorly addressed. Virgilio Viana argues that the best long-term solution for good stewardship of these ecosystems is to make forests worth more standing than cut. Education on native plants, local soils, local fish and the landscape where communities are located is a key element of sustainable management of forests. Higher education offers opportunities for people to improve their status within their own communities. Many young people migrate to urban centers. But with programs that make it possible for education in the community, families are able to stay close together and keep income in the community.
