Zakat, most broadly, is a type of almsgiving which is a must to pay for every Muslim who has wealth beyond a certain threshold. It is defined as an Islamic tax on wealth, and those who reach a certain wealth level are required to pay at least 2.5% of their accumulated wealth each year as zakat for the benefit of its recipients defined in eight categories.
