This lecture examines observed and projected temperature changes across the Amazon, spanning from the Andes to the Atlantic, according to different warming scenarios. It highlights key data sets and models used to analyze long-term changes in temperature, and what historical and current warming trends across the region can tell us about the future. Increased warming in the Amazon has been evident for decades, with important implications for biodiversity and local communities. If current trends continue, the world will not keep global temperatures below 1.5ºC as called for in the Paris Agreement, and the Amazon will be at risk of crossing a critical tipping point.
