In this chapter, Michael Obersteiner discusses mitigation on land in the wider framework of the Sustainable Development Goals. He proposes some ways to convert landscapes so that they contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change, including intensifying livestock production, conversion of grassland into maize fields, smart fertilizer use, reforestation efforts, biodiversity protected areas, etc. Referencing SDGs 2 and 12, Professor Obersteiner discusses business-as-usual and contraction and convergence scenarios for global diets and how they are compatible with the two-degree scenario.
