This lecture provides fundamental theories and approaches used in transboundary water negotiations. The lecture discusses why parties negotiate, the role of negotiation in water diplomacy, negotiation tools and techniques (such as alternative dispute resolution), structure of negotiation, and lessons for successful negotiation. This lecture also discusses the difference between interest-based, positional and intra-organizational bargaining, and brings in an example from the Senegal River.
