This chapter will familiarize learners with the purpose and place of ‘conventions’ in international law in general and in the field of culture, in particular, as well as the obligations and commitments they entail. More specifically, three related conventions in the field of culture are introduced: the World Heritage Convention, the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The chapter covers information on their origins and reviews the main features of the three Conventions. The key points they have in common, the differences between them and the ways that they complement each other are highlighted. Through this process, the purpose and characteristics of the 2003 Convention will become clearer.
